I’m trying to figure out the best plugins to use for a WordPress site, specifically for SEO, improving site speed, and security. If anyone has suggestions for must-have plugins, I’d really appreciate it. Thanks in advance!
There’s already a lot of good answers on this topic. Here’s one I shared earlier: https://www.thisforum.com/r/Wordpress/comments/13sethv/comment/jlsbmwr/
What you need depends on the type of website you’re running. Don’t add unnecessary plugins, as they can slow your site down. Here are some good options:
- SEO: Yoast SEO, RankMath SEO, The SEO Framework
- Caching: WP Rocket, LiteSpeed Cache
- Image Optimization: ShortPixel, Smush
- Security: iThemes, Wordfence, or plugins to secure the login page
- Forms: Contact Form 7, WPForms
- URL Shortening: Pretty Links, BetterLinks
- Ad Management: AdRotate, Ad Inserter
- Spam Protection: Akismet Anti-Spam, Antispam Bee
- Backups: All-in-One WP Migration, UpdraftPlus, Duplicator
Take a look at the WordPress plugin repository under “Popular Plugins” for more ideas.

You could just pick 10 random plugins to recommend every time someone asks, haha. (Just kidding, please don’t do that and ruin someone’s site.)
Start with none and only add plugins as you really need them.
Here’s what I personally use:
- The SEO Framework
- Sucuri Security - Auditing, Malware Scanner and Security Hardening
- Limit Login Attempts Reloaded
- Autoptimize
- RapidLoad Power-Up for Autoptimize
- WP 2FA – Two-factor authentication for WordPress
- CAPTCHA 4WP
- UpdraftPlus WordPress Backup Plugin
- WP-Sweep
- Docket Cache – Object Cache Accelerator
I also recommend managed WordPress hosting for extra security, like website application firewalls. You can add an extra layer of security with lightweight plugins like BBQ Firewall – Fast & Powerful Firewall Security, which works well with everything I listed above.
Some plugins I recommend:
- SEOPress for SEO
- Perfmatters for site performance
- OOPSpam for spam protection
- Wordfence for security
It really depends on what you need for your site. Here’s what we’re using:
- SEOPress
- Perfmatters
- OOPSpam
- WSForms
