When did plugins start needing payment plans?

If devs want to get paid, they shouldn’t develop for open-source projects under GPL. The GPL clearly states that all derivative works must also be GPL.

@Yun
That’s not entirely true. Plugins and themes are considered separate works and can be sold commercially. If Wordpress disagreed, they would’ve sued devs long ago.

I just wanted a free setup for testing… Respect to all the devs out there!

Plugin devs put in a lot of effort maintaining and improving their work, so it makes sense that they charge for updates and support.

There are free templates from Astra and plenty of free plugins. Most of them offer paid upgrades for extra features though.

What’s your budget like?

Most plugins now follow subscription models. It’s rare to find lifetime licenses anymore, and everything is moving toward subscriptions.

Without subscriptions, most plugins wouldn’t exist as they do today. Subscriptions allow devs to keep improving them. Sure, free plugins are great, but paid ones often have better support and features.

Not free, not user-friendly, and terrible support.
