I found a cool micro SaaS called PoopUp that lets you show popups on any website. It got me thinking - I could build a WordPress plugin to do the same and sell it on CodeCanyon. I whipped it up in a few days, submitted it, but they gave it a thumbs down (hard rejection means no second chances there).
So, I’m stuck with this plugin. I’m wondering if I should just make it free and publicly available on WordPress.org.
The biggest issue for me is the name inside the plugin… it’s not really appealing for clients. I think if you change the name and do a bit of advertising, it could be a really cool plugin. You could also distribute it on your own.
It depends on a couple of things. First, will you keep adding new features, or is this the final version? And, are you planning to offer a lifetime license or an annual one? A good idea might be to start with a lifetime deal at a good price for the first month, so you can build up your name on this forum. Maybe even offer a free version on the Wordpress plugin hub to get traction. After that, you can switch to a yearly license. As for pricing, you might want to ask others here since I’m not an expert, but personally, I wouldn’t pay more than €80 (with taxes, that’s about €100). But hey, I’m a small web agency, so I really watch my budget haha!
One more thing: I tested the plugin, and right now, it doesn’t do a whole lot. You might want to add more features, like links in the popups, a close button in the top right, better animations to look more like real notifications, settings for each popup, and maybe a trigger based on cookies so people don’t keep seeing the same popup every time they visit the site.
