How do you get your plugin noticed… any tips?

Hey all, looking for some advice!

I developed a plugin called Ad Commander after working on a project last year. There were plenty of ad management plugins out there, but none of them fit my needs—they were either too limited, too pricey, or missing key features.

Now, months later, my plugin is struggling to gain traction in the WordPress directory. Traffic is low, and downloads aren’t picking up. I know reviews and downloads will help boost the plugin’s ranking, but it’s hard to get the ball rolling without some attention first.

Here’s what I’ve tried so far:

  • Product Hunt launch—got a temporary boost, but most users weren’t long-term
  • LinkedIn posts—same thing, a short-lived bump, but not many real users
  • Posting on forums like this one—sometimes it’s seen as spam
  • Building backlinks to my plugin’s website—slow and steady, but it’s a grind

What I’m thinking about trying:

  • Paying for reviews on sites with newsletters—seems expensive, though
  • Running PPC ads—did a small test, but not sure it’s a long-term fix

So, what am I missing? Anyone here have any advice or methods that have worked for getting a plugin off the ground? I’d really appreciate your thoughts!

Try integrating your plugin with other popular ones. Maybe WooCommerce or PeepSo—could drive more traffic your way.

Here’s a checklist that might help:

  1. Find beta testers and give them a free license.
  2. Get feedback and improve the product.
  3. Launch with an early bird discount.
  4. List your plugin in popular marketplaces.
  5. Hire influencers to make YouTube videos promoting your plugin.

Do you know any WordPress influencers or have tips on how to reach them? I’ve tried reaching out to a few but never heard back.

It takes time. Make a list of influencers in a spreadsheet and group them by category. Reach out offering a free license, affiliate commissions, or a small payment to create a video.

@Lesley
I’ve done that, but so far no luck. Seems easier in theory than in practice.
